Elon Musk incorporated xAI on March 9, 2023, with a founding team of 11 AI researchers led by chief engineer Igor Babuschkin (formerly Google DeepMind). The company was publicly announced on July 12, 2023.

xAI unveiled Grok, an AI chatbot integrated with X (formerly Twitter), positioned as a 'maximally truth-seeking' alternative to ChatGPT. Initially available only to X Premium+ subscribers.

xAI released Grok-1 as open source, a 314-billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, making it one of the largest open-weight models available at the time.

xAI released Grok-1.5V, the first version of Grok capable of understanding images, diagrams, charts, and documents alongside text. The multimodal update brought Grok into parity with GPT-4V and Claude 3 Vision, enabling xAI to compete in the increasingly multimodal AI landscape.

xAI unveiled Grok 3, trained on the Colossus supercluster with 10x the compute of prior state-of-the-art models. Grok 3 introduced reasoning-focused variants, DeepSearch for research, and significant improvements in mathematics, coding, and world knowledge. The launch marked xAI's entry into the reasoning-model race with performance claimed to rival OpenAI and DeepSeek.

Musk announced xAI acquired X Corp. (formerly Twitter) in an all-stock transaction valuing X at $33 billion ($45 billion including debt). xAI was valued at $80 billion, creating a combined entity called X.AI Holdings Corp.

xAI unveiled Grok-4, along with a high-performance Grok Heavy variant. The company also received a $200 million military contract from the DoD on July 14, 2025.

SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction, valuing SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion for a combined $1.25 trillion. xAI became a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX.

xAI struck a deal with software company Anysphere (maker of Cursor AI code editor) giving it the right to acquire the company for $60 billion later in 2026, or pay $10 billion for joint work. This represented one of the largest potential AI tooling acquisitions.

xAI was officially rebranded as SpaceXAI in July 2026 after Musk announced in May that xAI would cease to exist as a separate company. Grok 4.5 was also released the same day, marking the consolidation of Musk's AI efforts under the SpaceX umbrella.
