Gavin Wood Publishes Polkadot Whitepaper

Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum and creator of the Solidity programming language, published the Polkadot whitepaper proposing a heterogeneous multi-chain architecture. The paper described a relay chain that would coordinate consensus and cross-chain communication between multiple parallel blockchains (parachains), enabling interoperability between different blockchain networks.

Polkadot ICO Raises 144 Million USD

Polkadot raised over 144.3 million USD in its initial coin offering, one of the largest ICOs of the 2017 cryptocurrency boom. The same week, Gavin Wood and others established the Web3 Foundation in Zug, Switzerland, to promote and fund blockchain-based decentralized web technologies. Parity Technologies, founded by Wood, began developing the Polkadot SDK.

Parity Wallet Bug Freezes ICO Funds

A vulnerability in the Parity Technologies multi-signature wallet library froze approximately 150 million USD worth of Ether, including a significant portion of the funds raised in the Polkadot ICO. Over 500 wallets were affected. The frozen funds were rendered permanently inaccessible, and no recovery mechanism existed in the Ethereum protocol to restore them.

Polkadot Mainnet Launch

Polkadot launched its mainnet under a proof-of-authority consensus model managed by the Web3 Foundation during its initial phase. By June 2020, the network transitioned to Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS), allowing DOT token holders to nominate validators to secure the network. The launch made Polkadot one of the most anticipated blockchain network launches since Ethereum.

Parachain Slot Auctions Begin

Polkadot launched its first parachain slot auctions, allowing projects to bid for a connection to the relay chain by locking DOT tokens via crowdloans. The initial auctions raised over 200 million USD from community contributions. Five parachains were onboarded in the first round, including Acala (DeFi) and Moonbeam (Ethereum-compatible smart contracts).

OpenGov Governance System Launched

Polkadot launched OpenGov, a new on-chain governance system that replaced the original Governance V1 model. OpenGov decentralized decision-making by allowing all DOT holders to participate in referenda directly, with parallel tracks for different proposal types and delegated voting through community representatives. The upgrade was designed to make governance more efficient and community-driven.

Kusama Spammening Stress Test Reaches 143K TPS

Polkadot's canary network Kusama underwent "The Spammening" stress test, handling approximately 143,000 transactions per second (TPS) at just 23% capacity. The test demonstrated the theoretical scalability of Polkadot's multi-chain architecture, with the network processing the load without degradation at a fraction of its maximum capability.

Polkadot 2.0 Upgrade with Agile Coretime

Polkadot 2.0 launched, introducing Agile Coretime to replace the fixed parachain slot auction model. The upgrade allowed projects to purchase coretime on demand rather than committing to two-year leases, making the network more flexible and accessible. Async backing improved block production efficiency, enabling faster parachain block confirmation.
