Louis Pasteur was born in Dole in the Jura region, the son of a tanner. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, earning his doctorate in sciences in 1847 with work on crystallography and the saturation capacity of arsenous acid.

Discovery of Molecular Chirality
While examining tartaric acid salts, Pasteur observed two mirror-image crystal forms that rotated polarized light in opposite directions. He proposed that molecules themselves could be chiral, founding stereochemistry and later earning the Rumford Medal (1856) for the work.

Fermentation Research at Lille
As dean of the new science faculty at Lille, Pasteur was consulted by brewers whose alcohol soured. Swan-Neck Flask Experiments Refute Spontaneous Generation
Pasteur's swan-neck flask experiments showed that sterile broth exposed to filtered air remained free of microbial growth, while broth exposed directly to air spoiled. The results undermined the ancient doctrine of spontaneous generation and supported the view that microorganisms come from other microorganisms.

Asked to investigate diseases devastating silkworms, Pasteur identified the parasite responsible for pébrine and developed microscopic screening of breeding stock. Anthrax Vaccine Demonstrated at Pouilly-le-Fort
In a public experiment, Pasteur vaccinated 25 sheep and 6 cows with his attenuated anthrax vaccine, then exposed them alongside unvaccinated animals to lethal anthrax. All the vaccinated animals survived and most of the unvaccinated died, convincing skeptical veterinarians and establishing laboratory vaccines as practical tools. His rivalry with German bacteriologist Robert Koch over anthrax and methods became a prominent Franco-German scientific dispute.

First Human Rabies Vaccination
Joseph Meister, a nine-year-old boy badly bitten by a rabid dog, was brought to Pasteur. With no proven treatment for the invariably fatal disease, Pasteur, with physician colleagues, administered his experimental attenuated rabies vaccine series. Meister survived, and the case made vaccination front-page news across Europe and America.

Founding of the Pasteur Institute
