The Hubble Space Telescope

The NASA and ESA observatory launched into low Earth orbit in 1990, whose repairs and discoveries — from the age of the universe to the first images of exoplanets — transformed astronomy and public engagement with science.

Timeline

Deep Fields and the Age of the Universe

Hubble's Deep Field images — long exposures of tiny "empty" patches of sky — revealed thousands of galaxies from the early universe. Combined with distance measurements of variable stars, Hubble data pinned the universe's age at roughly 13.8 billion years and pinned down the expansion rate debate.
