The Babylonian World Map
The Imago Mundi, a clay tablet from around 600 BC now in the British Museum, is the earliest known surviving world map. It places the city of Babylon at the center of a disc-shaped world, ringed by a "bitter river," with distant regions rendered as semi-mythical places — a map of cosmology as much as geography.

Ptolemy's Geography
Claudius Ptolemy's Geography codified the use of latitude and longitude coordinates, located roughly 8,000 places, and described map projections that translated the spherical Earth onto a flat surface. The work established the mathematical foundations of cartography, though its inherited data inflated some regions and its unknown landmasses invited later speculation.

Al-Idrisi's Tabula Rogeriana
The geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi completed the Tabula Rogeriana for the Norman king Roger II of Sicily, compiling knowledge from Greek, Islamic, and traveler sources into the most detailed world map of the Middle Ages. The work, oriented with south at the top, reflects the maturity of Islamic geographic scholarship at a Norman court — itself a crossroads of Mediterranean cultures.

Ptolemy's Rediscovery and Renaissance Cartography
Latin translations of Ptolemy's Geography, circulating in Italy from around 1410, catalyzed a renaissance of scientific mapmaking in Western Europe. Printed Ptolemy atlases became bestsellers, and their coordinate framework gave explorers and scholars a shared grid on which the rediscovered knowledge of antiquity collided with the new observations of the Age of Exploration.

Mercator's 1569 World Map
Gerardus Mercator published a world map on a new projection that rendered rhumb lines — constant compass bearings — as straight lines, solving the navigator's central problem of plotting courses across the ocean. The Mercator projection became the basis of nautical charts for centuries; its stretching of high latitudes also shaped, and distorted, the world's mental image of relative continental size.

The Cassini Family Triangulates France
Over more than a century of triangulation surveys begun under Giovanni Domenico Cassini and completed by his descendants, the Cassini family produced the completed map of France by 1789 — the first topographic map of an entire country grounded in systematic measurement. The enterprise demonstrated that a nation could be rendered as a measured, unified image, and set the template for national surveys worldwide.

The Ordnance Survey and National Mapping
Britain founded the Ordnance Survey in 1791, initially to map the Scottish Highlands for military control, publishing its first one-inch national map in 1801. It became the model of the modern national mapping agency, institutionalizing the idea that every square mile of a state should be precisely surveyed — a capability with consequences for taxation, administration, and warfare alike.

GPS and the Digital Map
The Global Positioning System, developed by the U.S. Department of Defense, reached full operational capability in 1995, allowing any receiver to fix its position from satellite signals.
