Grace Hopper — Mathematician, Naval Officer, and Compiler Pioneer

American mathematician, US Navy rear admiral, and computer scientist who pioneered machine-independent programming. She was among the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I, built the A-0 compiler, led FLOW-MATIC, and was the principal influence on COBOL — the business programming language still running much of the world's financial code.

Grace Brewster Murray, born in New York City on 9 December 1906, earned a PhD in mathematics at Yale University in 1934 with a thesis on irreducibility criteria, studying under Oystein Ore. She then taught mathematics at Vassar College, rising to associate professor by the outbreak of World War II.

Joining the Navy and the Harvard Mark I

Hopper joined the US Navy Reserve in 1943 and was assigned to the Bureau of Ships Computation Project at Harvard, where she became one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I, the electromechanical calculator led by Howard Aiken. She wrote what is credited as the first computer manual, the "Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator."

The First "Bug"

While working on the Mark II at Harvard, the team found a moth trapped in a relay and taped it into the logbook with the note "first actual case of bug being found." The term "bug" for a defect already existed in engineering slang, but the preserved moth popularized "debugging" as the word for fixing computer errors.

After joining the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation in 1949 and working on the UNIVAC I, Hopper completed the A-0 System in 1952 — widely credited as the first compiler, a program that translated symbolic instructions into machine code. Skeptics had told her computers could only do arithmetic; A-0 demonstrated that computers could translate their own programs.

Leading Eckert-Mauchly's (later Remington Rand's) automatic programming department from 1954, Hopper guided FLOW-MATIC, the first programming language to use English-like statements for business data processing. Her core conviction — that programs should be written in a language closer to English than to machine code — broke with the prevailing belief that programming was inevitably mathematical.

The Birth of COBOL

At the CODASYL conference convened by the US Defense Department, Hopper and her FLOW-MATIC served as the principal influence on the design of COBOL, a machine-independent, English-based business language. COBOL spread rapidly through government and industry and remains, by most estimates, in production use on major financial systems to this day.

Retirement, Recall, and Rear Admiral

Hopper retired from the Navy Reserve in 1966, was recalled to active duty within a year to help standardize the Navy's programming languages, and retired a second time in 1986 as a rear admiral — at 79, the oldest serving officer in the US Navy at the time. Promoted to commodore in 1983, she became a public advocate for computing, famous for her "nanosecond" wire lectures.

Final Honors

Hopper received the National Medal of Technology in 1991. She died on 1 January 1992 in Arlington, Virginia, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Her honors grew after death: in 2016 President Obama posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Yale renamed a residential college for her in 2017, and NVIDIA named its flagship Hopper GPU architecture after her in 2022.
