Ethereum Whitepaper Published
Vitalik Buterin published the Ethereum whitepaper, describing a blockchain platform with a Turing-complete scripting language for building decentralized applications. Buterin, a programmer and co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine, proposed the platform after failing to gain consensus on expanding Bitcoin's capabilities beyond simple transactions.
Ethereum Crowdsale
The Ethereum Foundation held a public crowdsale of Ether tokens, selling participants the native cryptocurrency in exchange for Bitcoin. The sale raised over 31,000 BTC worth approximately 18 million USD at the time. Multiple co-founders joined the project including Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin.
Ethereum Frontier Mainnet Launch
The Ethereum mainnet launched with the "Frontier" release, marking the official genesis of the Ethereum blockchain. The genesis block contained 8,893 transactions allocating various amounts of Ether to addresses from the crowdsale. The platform's native currency, Ether, began trading on exchanges shortly after launch.
The DAO Attack
An attacker exploited a vulnerability in The DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization built on Ethereum that had raised over 150 million USD, stealing approximately 50 million USD worth of Ether. The Ethereum community controversially decided to hard fork the blockchain to reverse the theft, leading to a split that created Ethereum Classic on the original unreversed chain.
Enterprise Ethereum Alliance Founded
The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA) was announced with 30 founding members including Microsoft, Intel, JPMorgan Chase, and Banco Santander. By May 2017, membership had grown to over 150 organizations including Mastercard, Cisco, and Samsung SDS. The alliance aimed to develop enterprise-grade standards for Ethereum-based blockchain solutions.
London Hard Fork and EIP-1559
The London upgrade activated Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559, which overhauled Ethereum's fee market by introducing a base fee that is burned (removed from circulation) rather than paid to miners. This mechanism reduced Ether's inflation rate and created periods of deflationary supply. The upgrade also expanded the区块 size variability to handle network congestion more efficiently.
The Merge: Ethereum Transitions to Proof-of-Stake
Ethereum completed "The Merge," transitioning its consensus mechanism from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in an event known as the Paris upgrade at block 15,537,393. The transition merged Ethereum's execution layer with the Beacon Chain proof-of-stake consensus layer, cutting the blockchain's energy usage by over 99%. The upgrade had been in development for over six years.
Shapella Upgrade Enables Staking Withdrawals
The Shanghai-Capella (Shapella) upgrade went live, allowing validators who had staked 32 ETH or more to withdraw their staked Ether for the first time since staking began in December 2020. The upgrade completed the final phase of the transition to proof-of-stake, removing the last major restriction on staked ETH and providing liquidity to stakers.
Dencun Upgrade and Proto-Danksharding
The Deneb-Cancun (Dencun) upgrade activated EIP-4844 (Proto-Danksharding), introducing "blobs" for temporary data storage. This significantly reduced transaction costs for Layer 2 networks by providing a cheaper alternative to calldata for posting compressed transaction data to Layer 1. The upgrade marked a major scaling milestone for the Ethereum ecosystem.
US Spot Ethereum ETFs Approved
The US Securities and Exchange Commission approved spot Ether exchange-traded funds, allowing direct investment in ETH on American stock exchanges. Major asset managers including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale launched products. The approval followed months of speculation and legal pressure after the SEC had approved Bitcoin spot ETFs earlier in the year.
Pectra Upgrade
The Prague-Electra (Pectra) upgrade launched, bringing various protocol improvements to the Ethereum network. The upgrade continued Ethereum's roadmap of incremental enhancements following the transition to proof-of-stake and the introduction of proto-danksharding, further optimizing the platform for Layer 2 scaling solutions.
Fusaka Upgrade
The Fulu-Osaka (Fusaka) upgrade went live, introducing several protocol improvements to the Ethereum network. This was the third major upgrade since the Dencun hard fork, continuing Ethereum's evolution toward greater scalability and efficiency as the platform maintained its position as the leading smart contract blockchain.
