Cardano: The Academic Blockchain Platform

Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform founded by Charles Hoskinson with a peer-reviewed academic approach to development. Launched in 2017, it progressed through defined eras Byron, Shelley, Goguen, and Basho, with smart contracts enabled by the Alonzo hard fork in 2021.

Cardano Founding by Charles Hoskinson

Cardano Founding by Charles Hoskinson

Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood founded IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong) and began development of the Cardano blockchain after Hoskinson left Ethereum following a dispute with Vitalik Buterin over whether the project should accept venture capital. The project was designed with a research-driven, peer-reviewed approach to blockchain development.

Cardano Byron Mainnet Launch

Cardano launched its mainnet with the Byron era, the foundational settlement layer of the blockchain. The ADA cryptocurrency began trading on exchanges, and Cardano became the largest cryptocurrency to use a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism at the time. The Ouroboros proof-of-stake protocol, developed by University of Edinburgh professor Aggelos Kiayias, was the first provably secure PoS protocol.

Shelley Era Launches Decentralization

Shelley Era Launches Decentralization

The Shelley upgrade marked a major milestone in Cardano's decentralization, introducing staking and delegation mechanisms that allowed ADA holders to participate in network security by delegating to stake pools. The upgrade transitioned Cardano from a federated Byron network to a community-run, decentralized network with over 1,000 stake pools created within months.

Alonzo Hard Fork Enables Smart Contracts

The Alonzo hard fork activated smart contract functionality on Cardano through the Plutus platform, allowing developers to build decentralized applications on the blockchain. The upgrade introduced native token support and marked the beginning of the Goguen era. Plutus smart contracts were written in Haskell-derived languages, reflecting Cardano's academic foundation.

Cardano Reaches 77 Billion USD Market Cap

ADA reached a market capitalization of 77 billion USD, making it the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market cap at the time. The price surge was driven by anticipation of the Alonzo smart contract upgrade and growing interest in proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies. Cardano's market cap peak occurred during the broader 2021 cryptocurrency bull market.

Vasil Hard Fork Improves Scalability

The Vasil hard fork was activated, named after the late Cardano community member Vasil Stoyanov Dabov. The upgrade introduced CIP-31 (reference inputs), CIP-32 (inline datums), and CIP-33 (reference scripts), improving Plutus smart contract efficiency, reducing transaction costs, and increasing the blockchain's throughput capacity for decentralized applications.

SEC Labels ADA an Unregistered Security

The US Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit against Coinbase alleging that ADA was an unregistered security. Robinhood delisted ADA alongside SOL and MATIC following the SEC action, while trading volume on decentralized exchanges increased. Input Output Global issued statements disputing the SEC's characterization of ADA.

CIP-1694 and Cardano Governance Launch

The Cardano community approved CIP-1694, a governance framework proposal that laid the foundation for the Voltaire era. The proposal introduced on-chain voting mechanisms, a constitutional committee, and delegate representatives, enabling ADA holders to participate in protocol parameter changes and treasury withdrawals. The governance system was designed to make Cardano fully self-governing.

Chang Hard Fork Initiates Voltaire Era

The Chang hard fork activated the first phase of Cardano's Voltaire governance era, implementing the CIP-1694 model on-chain. The upgrade established a constitutional committee and interim governance structures, marking Cardano's transition to a community-governed blockchain. ADA holders gained the ability to vote on protocol changes directly through their stake.
