In 1940, before penicillin had entered clinical use, Edward Abraham and Ernst Chain reported an enzyme from bacteria that destroyed the drug — penicillinase. Doctors in Michigan identified the first Staphylococcus aureus fully resistant to vancomycin, the antibiotic long held as the last line of defense. The gene for resistance had transferred from vancomycin-resistant enterococci, demonstrating that resistance traits move between bacterial species.

The O'Neill Review's 10-Million-Death Forecast
The Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, commissioned by the UK government and led by economist Jim O'Neill, published its final report projecting that drug-resistant infections could kill 10 million people a year by 2050 and cost the global economy 100 trillion US dollars. The forecast was criticized by some researchers for its methodology, but it moved AMR from technical literature onto political agendas worldwide.

UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR

The Global Burden Quantified
